Prince Vs. The Music Industry (by Gerard Desir)

Music business advanced class. Many years ago Prince had an issue with Warner brothers regarding his recording contract. He would write slave on the side of his face which prompted him to do something that would make him the most hated man in the music business. He changed his name to a symbol. Then he released material under that name which infuriated the label. They took him to court and tried to sue him for millions of dollars. They said that he breached his contract because he was recording music with another label while still being signed to Warner Brothers. Prince/Symbol told them that I signed the contract with you as Prince the recording artist. I now go by the name of Symbol so therefore I am free to sign with another label. Thinking that they had him, Warner Brothers then told him that he was still obligated to make five more albums before he was released from his contract. Prince/Symbol merely went into his vault and gave them five albums worth of music. The rest is music history  Open your eyes to the business of music people. Nuff said.

About Beat Making Competitions
First and foremost: Never go to a third party vendor who is claiming that they will submit your demos to major labels. Most likely they will charge you a fee and chances are your stuff will never get heard. Second, beware of beat making competitions. These are no different from playing 3 card monte out in the street. The entity that is sponsoring the beat making competition already has his or her own clique that is in the competition. The main goal is not to usually find a winner. The key is seeing how the "clique" stacks up against the competition so you as the newbie will submit your track, the sponsor will like it but will make sure you do not win. People in the inner circle will listen to your track so that the concepts can be stolen. They will not steal the track outright. 


About Distribution
Also when it comes distributing your music there are great sites such as tunecore (one of my favorites) which is a great site for distributing your music. The main qualification is that you have to have an LLC (limited liability company) set up and they will do the promotion and distribution for you. Not only digitally but also in physical record shops that are not based here. LLC set up varies from state to state but keep in mind you don't have to set up the LLC in your geographical location. You can live in Texas and your LLC can be set up in Detroit which right now has the best rates due to their economy. I can answer more questions but these tidbits should help outside of the standard get a good lawyer.

Artists NEED to Know this Before Signing a Deal (by Bigg Luc)

Blacktopian Citizen Bigg Luc gives some great advice to rising artists looking to get a record deal.
Here is what he had to say.




Make sure you don't sign anything until you have an entertainment attorney look over the agreement. Another thing, if a label aggregate is coming to you trying to sign you to their label, but wants you to but up $2,500 to them to distribute your cd and they're not promoting or marketing your project while asking 35-45% of all profits, run like the plague. It's a scam. 

I run a label and don't charge half of what these crooks do. We also provide advisory services to our clients ie contract review of other services from other firms on a probono basis.



If you produce your band and put money into the project, you're the/an executive producer on the project. Create a separate entity so that you get points from that project as exp. Do the same for producer, songwriter, singers etc. Make sure you write a separate agreement for each service with either a flat fee, residual percentage points or a hybrid of both in the agreement.
