#WCW (Wed. Classy Woman): Afeni Shakur

January 10, 1947 – May 2, 2016


          This Blacktopian #WCW Award Trophy goes to the late Afeni Shakur who passed away earlier this week at the age of 69.  Most of you may only remember her as the mother of the late, great Tupac Shakur, however her contributions to the world goes far beyond raising one of the greatest rappers in history.  Afeni was a very prominent businesswoman, philanthropist, activist, speaker and once a member of the Black Panther party.
          Thank you Afeni Shakur and R.I.P.

Last Week on April 27th was a special night for poetry as Podcasts On Demand aired "My Fat Ain't For Everybody, A Night of Poetry from the Soul by Tammy Thomas" and during one of the intermissions the listeners were able to catch an earful of the amazing lead single "The Drug Song" from R&B singer Nikia's current EP titled SHE IS ME.

Prince influences New Artist

 

Although we lost one of our legendary performers, the artist known as Prince, his music and legacy will live on for generations to come.  Prince's music is timeless and so powerful that it has even inspired young musicians and even artists from other genres of music.... such as songwriter, producer, keyboardist, singer and rapper Mr. Boom Boom Bang.



In the winter of 2015 the artist, Mr. BBB released a single titled "Let's Make Love Like The 90s" and DJs, critics and taste-makers compared Mr. Boom Boom Bang's vocals on the chorus to a late 80s / early 90s Prince!  When asked, in several interviews Mr. Boom Boom Bang explained that he was indeed inspired by the vocals of Prince which influenced him to sing the hook of the song in the style of the late "Purple Rain" singer.

Single Mother of 4 expresses what BLACKTOPIA means to Her

I'm a 41 year old single mother of 4 children. I come from a mixed 

background and grew up very differently. 

I'm from New York but live in NC now. It's a struggle having a career 

in the South. Being a woman is always hard but 

when you add being a minority to it, things can be a challenge. 

I appreciate Blacktopia and what it represents. It's gives people a 

place to express themselves whether it be good, bad or 

sad. It opens opportunity to hear what others have been 

through or are going through. People need to listen. Sometimes 

it's the smallest things that provide insight into our own lives.

I give back daily in my career and I try to help whenever 

I can in my own community to empower others to make the

Legendary R&B vocalist Aaliyah may be gone, but her beautiful spirit and music will never be forgotten and will continue to live on for generations to come.  In a recent song, K.W. the Artisan keeps the soul of Aaliyah fresh by introducing her wonderful sound to the new generation in the single "Come Over" the follow up to his debut single "If I Die Tonight".
